AAU Basketball Age/Grade Determination

AAU acceptable forms of Verification

Proof of photo identification for eligibility must be available for review, by an AAU designee at all AAU licensed competitions. If the documents are not available the team is subject to removal from the competition. Acceptable documents include any of the following:

  • An unexpired Passport
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Department of Motor Vehicles I.D. card issued within three (3) years d. Military Dependent I.D.
  • Electronic Age Verification through SportsAge ID (A one-time registration fee of only $15.00 covers 100% of all updating and processing fees for as long as an athlete participates in the AAU Boys Basketball Program)
  • National Sports ID (A yearly fee of $10.00 validates your eligibility for licensed AAU events).

NOTICE:

  1. Grade based teams may participate in age-based events by “playing up” a division. (i.e. 7th grade team playing up in a 14U event).
  2. Some districts might not conduct grade-based championships. In those districts, grade-based teams can earn a seed for the grade-based AAU World Championship Tournament by “playing up” in an age-based District Championship or Super Regional.

AAU AGE BASED DIVISIONS

AGE BASED DIVISIONS – 7U, 8U, 9U, 10U, 11U, 12U, 13U & 14U. For teams that have chosen to organize on the basis of the athlete’s age, the AAU provides agebased competition in the divisions listed below following these eligibility requirements. AAU Grade Divisions

GRADE DIVISIONS – 7U/1st, 8U/2 nd , 9U/3 rd , 10U/4 th , 11U/5 th , 12U/6 th , 13U/7 th & 14U/8 th Grades For teams that have chosen to organize on the basis of the athletes’ grade, the AAU provides grade competition in the divisions listed below following these eligibility requirements. This division will be used at all AAU Boys’ World Championship competition. Proof of photo identification for eligibility must be available for review, by an AAU designee at all AAU licensed competitions. If the documents are not available the team is subject to removal from the competition. Acceptable documents include any of the following: a. An unexpired Passport b. Valid Driver’s License c. Department of Motor Vehicles I.D. card issued within three (3) years d. Military Dependent I.D. e. Electronic Age Verification through SportsAge ID (A one-time registration fee of only $15.00 covers 100% of all updating and processing fees for as long as an athlete participates in the AAU Boys Basketball Program) or National Sports ID (A yearly fee of $10.00 validates your eligibility for licensed AAU events). f. IN ADDITION to one of the proofs of age eligibility items listed above in “a” through “e”, Proof of Grade must be available for review by an AAU designee at all AAU licensed competitions in the Grade Based division. If the documents are not available, the team is subject to removal from the competition. Acceptable Proof of Grade documents include any of the following: 1. A photocopy of that portion of the athletes’ report card for the current school year which shows name, grade and school. 2. Confirmation of grade level from a school administrator (guidance counselor, principal, dean, etc.) on school letterhead. 7U/1st Grade Division An athlete can be no older than 7 on or before August 31, 2023. Grade Policy: An athlete who is in the 1st Grade as of October 1, 2022 and who is no older than 8 on or before August 31, 2023 is eligible to compete in the 8U/2nd grade division. 8U/2 nd Grade Division An athlete can be no older than 8 on or before August 31, 2023. Grade Policy: An athlete who is in the 2nd grade as of October 1, 2022 and who is no older than 9 on or before August 31, 2023 is eligible to compete in the 8U/2nd grade division. 9U/3 rd Grade Division An athlete can be no older than 9 on or before August 31, 2023. Grade Policy: An athlete who is in the 3rd Grade as of October 1, 2022 and who is no older than 10 on or before August 31, 2023 is eligible to compete in the 9U/3rd grade division. 10U/4 th Grade Division An athlete can be no older than 10 on or before August 31, 2023. Grade Policy: An athlete who is in the 4 th Grade as of October 1, 2022 and who is no older than 11 on or before August 31, 2023 is eligible to compete in the 10U/4 th grade division. 11U/5 th Grade Division An athlete can be no older than 11 on or before August 31, 2023. Grade Policy: An athlete who is in the 5 th Grade as of October 1, 2022 and who is no older than 12 on or before August 31, 2023 is eligible to compete in the 11U/5 th grade division. 12U/6 th Grade Division 6 10/28/2023 An athlete can be no older than 12 on or before August 31, 2023. Grade Policy: An athlete who is in the 6 th Grade as of October 1, 2022 and who is no older than 13 on or before August 31, 2023 is eligible to compete in the 12U/6 th grade division. 13U/7 th Grade Division An athlete can be no older than 13 on or before August 31, 2023. Grade Policy: An athlete who is in the 7 th Grade as of October 1, 2022 and who is no older than 14 on or before August 31, 2023 is eligible to compete in the 13U/7 th grade division. 14U/8 th Grade Division An athlete can be no older than 14 on or before August 31, 2023. Grade Policy: An athlete who is in the 8 th Grade as of October 1, 2022 and who is no older than 15 on or before August 31, 2023 is eligible to compete in the 14U/8 th grade division. 

AAU High School Divisions Determination

15U/9th Grade Division

An athlete can be no older than 15 on or before August 31, 2023. Grade Policy: An athlete who is in the 9th grade as of October 1, 2022 and who is no older than 16 on or before August 31, 2023 is eligible to play in the 15U/9th grade division. 

16U/10th Grade Division

An athlete can be no older than 16 on or before August 31, 2023. Grade Policy: An athlete who is in the 10th grade as of October 1, 2022 and who is no older than 17 on or before August 31, 2023 is eligible to play in the 16U/10th grade division.

17U/11th Grade Division 

An athlete can be no older than 17 on or before August 31, 2023. Grade Policy: An athlete who is in the 11th grade as of October 1, 2022 and who is no older than 18 on or before August 31, 2023 is eligible to play in the 17U/11th grade division.

20 & Under Division

An athlete can be no older than 20 on or before August 31, 2023. (Tournament Hosts, at its discretion, can create separate high school, prep schools, junior college divisions or any combination thereof)
